Seen from above, the Folly River is the thing that explains this stretch of the island. The photograph here looks down on the community pier and boat lifts behind Turtle Bay, with the marsh running out toward James Island.
The Folly River runs along the back of the Turtle Bay community, separating Folly Beach from James Island. At high tide it's wide and deep enough for boats; at low tide the marsh flats are exposed and alive with shorebirds.
From the air, you can see how the end-unit position of 16 Turtle Bay captures water views on two sides — something that isn't obvious at ground level, where the marsh reads as a single edge rather than a bend the property sits inside.
