Staying within walking distance of downtown Folly Beach

Downtown Folly is Center Street, and from 16 Turtle Bay it is 0.6 miles — about a ten-minute walk. The beach is the same distance in the same direction.

How far it actually is

“Walking distance” is a claim almost every Folly Beach listing makes, so here is the measured version rather than the marketing one. These are routed on foot from the property, not straight lines drawn on a map.

  • 0.6 milesCenter Street — 10-minute walk
  • 0.5 milesFolly Beach — 10-minute walk

Both numbers come from routing on OpenStreetMap data rather than from an estimate. The site used to say five minutes to each; when it was actually measured, ten was the honest figure, so that is what it says now.

The practical version: downtown and the sand are in the same direction, so you are not choosing between them. One walk gets you to the top of Center Street, and carrying on in the same line gets you to the water.

What you reach on foot

Center Street is the whole of downtown Folly — it runs across the island from the river side to the ocean, and nearly everything commercial on Folly sits on it or just off it. Restaurants, bars, and surf shops are concentrated along its length, close enough together that you can walk down and decide where to eat once you are there.

At the ocean end is the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier, run by Charleston County Parks and open for both fishing and walking. It is the natural turning point of an evening walk downtown.

Breakfast is the other reason to make the walk: Lost Dog Cafe is a Folly breakfast institution, a short walk from Center Street.

For what is worth walking to in more detail, the local guide covers dining and the rest of the island, and the first-time guide covers how the island is laid out.

Why walking distance matters here

On Folly, walking distance is not a nicety — it is the difference between a relaxed week and a daily parking problem. Folly is a small island that draws day-trippers from Charleston, and public parking near Center Street and the beach accesses is limited and actively enforced. On a summer weekend, circling for a space is a normal part of the day.

Staying within a walk of downtown means you park once. 16 Turtle Bay has a private garage and a covered carport between them holding up to 3 vehicles, so the car goes in on arrival and stays there — no moving it for dinner, no feeding a meter, no returning to the house to find your space taken.

On Center Street, or a walk from it

There is a real choice here, and it is worth being straight about it. Staying on Center Street itself puts you in the middle of the restaurants and the bars, which is exactly right for some trips. Folly has a genuine bar scene concentrated on that strip, and in summer and at weekends it is loud.

Staying a ten-minute walk away on the river side is the other side of that trade: close enough to walk in for dinner and walk home after, far enough that the noise is something you visit rather than something you sleep next to. The river side also faces the sunset, which is why both decks at the house look that way.

The other difference is what you get for the money. Downtown accommodation on Folly is largely hotel rooms. 16 Turtle Bay is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom house with a full kitchen and its own garage, which matters more on a week with a group than on a night or two for two people.

If you would rather not walk

Ten minutes on foot does not suit everyone or every errand. The garage and carport hold up to 3 vehicles with room for a golf cart as well, so driving or riding down is straightforward if you would rather — bearing in mind that parking at the other end is the constraint, not the distance.

One thing worth knowing before you book: the house itself is not step-free. The garage is at ground level, but the living area and all three bedrooms are up a full flight of stairs and there is no elevator. The walk downtown is flat; getting into the house is not.
